What is a Social Class?

A social class is a group of people who share similar levels of wealth, education, influence and social status. These are the groups in which people are categorized both factually and opinion-based.

Monarcy

  • Is the highest class
  • You had to be born into the class
  • Had the highest quality of life

Nobility

  • Second highest class
  • Were whole families led by the father
  • Were wealthy
  • Their quality of life was high
  • There was a division between the new and old families

Gentry

  • Gentry is the class for knights, gentlemen, gentlewomen and squires of the kingdom
  • They were wealthy people
  • They were not born in the class

Merchants

  • Merchants are in the fourth position from the levels of the social classes
  • Merchants gained a lot of wealth by their small businesses
  • Merchants were neither poor or rich

Yoeman

  • Most yeoman were farmers, tradesmen, and craftworkers
  • Yeoman are fifth position from the levels of social classes
  • Most of their money went to expanding and improving their land

Laborers

  • Last level of social class
  • They had a very hard life
  • They gained nothing at all
  • Life for laborers was stressful, hard and very difficult to live in

Social Classes Today

  • Objective method, subjective method, reputational method
  • A study done in 2016 in the United States
  • The current social classes are lower, working, middle and upper class
