Removal of Homosexuality from the dsm

"After intense debate, the American Psychiatric Association removes homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The widely used reference manual is revised to state that sexual orientation "does not necessarily constitute a psychiatric disorder" (Annenberg Learner).

In 1973 homosexuality was removed from the DSM. This widely effected the LGBT community. Up until 1973 homosexuality was considered to be a mental health disorder, which put a negative stigma on homosexuality. It made loving someone of the same sex taboo. This change vastly impacted the LGBT community in a positive way, because they were finally able to be seen as normal people instead of someone with a mental disorder who was sick and needed to be 'fixed'

Impact

Changing society's understanding

Before this developmental change, society saw homosexuals as something taboo, or someone who was mentally sick or unstable. People would often keep away from homosexuals because they didn't understand. Members of the LGBT community would often feel ashamed or hide their feelings in order to avoid being outcasted. After the change, the members of the LGBT community were slowly more accepted by society because they were no longer deemed "sick". Today's society most people are accustomed to homosexuals. Members of the LGBT community have a sense of pride for who they are and their identity. The pride movement is huge around the world currently and majority of the population support free love.

This development is applicible outside of social sciences because it directly impacts a fairly large portion of our society. Since homosexuality has become more accepted a lot more people are comfortable enough to "come out" to their friends and families and be who they really are without the negative stigma influencing their choices.
