Mexican Cession

The Mexican Cession was a large chunk of land aquired by the US in 1848. A plan was set into place to begin an argument with Spain that eventually forced them to attack us. We responded with a decleration of war. We defeated Spain and they were forced to give up their land to the United States.

Made Americans even more eager to spread West. Also, a religous group, the mormans, also established a settlement in this land that is now Utah.

There were many natural resources as well as fertile farmland. But the Americans wanted this land for a different reason. They wanted to build a railroad going all the way across America and they would use this land to build it on.

Louisiana Purchase

Louisiana Purchase was a massive piece of land bought from Napolean, the ruler of France, in 1803. After the purchase was made, Thomas Jefferson was a well known and respected hero. For only $15,000,000 he more than doubled our controlled territory, but he did so it in secret. If the Federalist party knew of his plans, they never would have allowed it. Jefferson had to go against the constitution in order to help the citizens of the US.

It began the Maifest Destiny. It also allowed for the creation of new maps, more relationships with the Indians, and the discovery of new plant and animal species.

Aquired by James Polk in 1846 in a treaty with Britan. Americans settled for this but they wanted territory in what is now Canada.

This treaty was signed in 1783 in which Britan recognizes the US as an independent country. Americans also finally got a chance to explore the territory beyond the Appilaccian Mountains.

The colonies were founded by explorers from Britan from 1607 - 1732. These explorers wanted three things, a chance to make money in a new and rich land, escape from religous persecution, and a chance to become famous by finding the cities of legend. (God, Glory, Gold)

Florida was a haven for criminals and runaway slaves until it was claimed by the US in 1819 from Spain in exchange for relieving them of their $5,000,000 debt.

Allowed the US to go to war with the Seminoles and stopped runaway slaves from escaping to Florida.
