Galatians 3:10-4:7

The Curse

Galatians 3:10

The Curse

For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse as it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law."

What?

if you base your salvation on works you are cursed because you will never be able to adhere completely to the law.

Un-Cursed

The law is not based on faith... v. 12

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us... v. 13

The Promise

Galatians 3:16

The Promise

The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed... meaning one person, who is Christ. v. 16

For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promises; but God gave it to Abraham through a promise. v. 18

Genesis 12:7

The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring [or seed] I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

Paul's Point

There are no stipulations concerning obedience.

God simply made a promise to Abraham and he believed it.

The Law's Purpose

The New Living Translation is clearest:

Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins....

(v. 19, NLT)

The Law shows our need for something more:

Grace through faith in Jesus

The Schoolmaster

...the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

(v. 24-25, KJV)

A Guardian

"Let me put it another way.

The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith. And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian."

24-25 in NLT

A Guide

The law was meant to keep God's people pointed in the right direction, toward Him, until Jesus came.

A Guide

Growing UP

Galatians 4:1-3

Growing UP

What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world.

Living at Home

The law is like living at home. You have your parents telling you what to do, when to do it, how to do it.

They are trying to teach you and protect you...

Prepare you

Moving Out

Faith in Christ is like living on your own.

You have freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want to, but there are still things you should and shouldn't do; right and wrong, good and bad.
