Ptolemy and Copernicus

Ptolemy's Theory

  • Ptolemy thought that the planets moved in small circles, called epicycles, as they revolved in larger circles around Earth.

Ptolemy

  • Ptolemy, Latin in full Claudius Ptolemaeus (fl. AD 127-145, Alexandria), ancient astronomer, geographer, and mathematician who considered the Earth the center of the universe (the "Ptolemaic system").

  • Ptolemy thought the Sun, Moon, Planets and Stars (heavenly bodies) must travel in a uniform motion in the most '"perfect"' path possible,a circle. But they don't.

  • Ptolemy believed that the heavenly bodies circular motion was caused by them being attached to unseen revolving solid spheres.

Ptolemy's Model

AND

  • Ptolemy's model: "Earth-centered," or "geocentric" Ptolemy thought that all celestial objects including the planets, Sun, Moon, and stars orbited Earth. Earth, in the center of the universe, did not move at all.

SCIENCE

  • The word "planet" comes from the Greek word "planetos" meaning wandering star (thus, unlike the Earth, in Ptolemy's model, the Sun and Moon were planets). Because of retrograde, for centuries unexplainable movements, the heavenly bodies in Ptolemy's model does not move by ellipses but rather by curves called epicycles.
  • This animation shows simplified Ptolemy's model of the Universe with Moon as a first, and Sun as a fourth planet orbiting around Earth. All planets except Moon and Sun are moving on epicycles whit their centres positioned on circles called deferent. Last sphere, after Saturn, is a sphere of Stars. In this particular figure, orbital periods are adjusted so they always draw the same path.
  • The background sound is Simphonies of planets recorded by NASA Voyager.

Copernicu's Theory

  • Copernican heliocentrism is the name given to the astronomical model developed by Nicolaus Copernicus and published in 1543.

  • The Planets revolved around the sun in the same direction but at different speeds and distances from the sun.

  • The Copernican System gave a truer picture than the older Ptolemy System.
