William Holloman, a thirteen year old boy, was on his way to murder his brother's killer. He had a gun in the back of his pants and was ready to leave his apartment. On the elevator, something strange happened. A man got into the elevator, but William soon realized who the man was. The man in the elevator was Buck, his brothers old best friend who had died a few years before. As Buck and Will talked in the elevator, Will revealed the detail of his plan to kill his brother, Shawn's, killer who he believed was a boy named Riggs. Buck kept on telling Will that he did not have it in him to kill Riggs, even though the third rule they lived by was to always get revenge, no matter what
Buck was one of Shawn's best friends. Buck was the one who taught Shawn the three rules: never cry, never snitch, always get revenge. Shawn then taught William these rules, leading to William's desire to kill Riggs to get revenge for his brother's death.
On the sixth floor, a beautiful girl walks into the elevator. To Will's surprise, the girl can see Buck, even though he is not real. William soon realized the girl on the elevator was Dani. Dani was Will's best friend when he was younger, They used to play together on the playground when they were eight, but one time on the playgound, gunshots were fired and eight year old Dani was killed. And just like Buck, Dani questioned Will's capability of killing Riggs
Dani was the most beautfil girl in the world, Will always remembered here wearing a flower covered dress and smelling like perfect flowers. It was after Dani's death that Shawn taught William the rules. William learned at age eight not to cry. William thought Dani was beautiful, perfect, and innocent, so he felt wrong knowing that he could be with Dani one moment, and killing Riggs the next. Dani made Will question whether or not he should kill Riggs.
As the elevator reached the fifth floor, someone new got into the elevator. William's Uncle Mark, who has been dead for as long as Will could remember. Just like the others, Uncle Mark argued that Will couldn't and shouldn't kill Riggs. WIlliam kept arguing that he had to follow the rules. It was at this point when Will realized he couldn't bring himself to admit he was about to kill someone. After William got the words out, Uncle Mark reminded him that all actions have repercussions and killing Riggs will not be the end.
Uncle Mark was the brother of William's father. William grew up hearing two stories of his Uncle Mark. The first was that he videotaped everything and dreamed of making a movie. The second story was that he needed to buy a new video camera, so he carried around rolls of money, because of this, he was robbed and killed. WIlliam's father Mikey, eventually killed the man who killed Uncle Mark.
The fourth floor was crazy for William. The man he had been waiting for entered the elevator, his father. William had not known his father as he passed away a long time ago, however. William only knew his father as far as Shawn's stories allowed him to remember. William revealed that his mother always told him that his father died of a broken heart, however his brother told hi, that Shawn was killed after killing Uncle Mark's murderer. As Mark was talking to his father, it seemed brand new to him. William explained to his father that he is planning on getting revenge on the boy who killed Shawn.
William's father, Mikey, killed that man who robbed and killed Uncle Mark. This led to Mikey's death because he was later killed for killing the killer. Because of this, William never new his father. He was so young when he passed away that his memories have began to fade. Although he pretends to remember for his mother and brother's sake, he truly does not remember his father.
Halfway through the ride on the fourth floor, Mikey began explaining the story of how he killed Uncle Mark's killer, and how it resulted in him getting killed. Mikey killed Uncle Mark's killer, but soon revealed that he had killed the wrong man. Mikey killed a man named Gee, thinking he was Uncle Mark's killer, but in reality, Gee was completely innocent. Then, out of nowhere, Mikey put the gun to William's head and cocked the gun. Suddenly he uncocked the gun and hugged William. This demonstrated to William what it feels like to be so close to death, looking your killer in the eye.
The act of Mikey getting killed for killing Gee demonstrates exactly what Uncle Mark was explaining in the previous elevator ride, that your actions have consequences and killing someone is never the end, it is just the beginning. Mikey's actions had consequences; consequences that led to this very moment.
At the third floor, someone William did not recognize got onto the elevator. He seemed so normal and unrecognizable that William thought he was real. Suddenly, the man revealed that his name was Frick. Buck announced that Frick was his murderer. Frick was the one who robbed and shot Buck at a payphone so long ago. This was crazy for William to hear, as Shawn rarely talked about Buck's death. And now it all made sense for William. Shawn followed the rules, he got revenge on Buck's killer. Shawn killed Frick. That explains why there was a missing bullet in Shawn's gun, and it could explain why Shawn is dead.
Frick was part of the Dark Suns. One thing you must do to become a member of this gang is to do a dark deed. As Frick's dark deed, he planned on robbing Buck, but he got scared and shot him. Shawn always followed the rules, so as revenge, he killed Frick.
No one came into the elevator so it began to close, but at the last minute, someone's hands caught the door before it closed. It was Shawn. Nothing changed, he was in the same clothes he was wearing when he was killed, a bloodstained shirt and blue jeans. Everyone was happy to see Shawn. But, to William's surprise, Shawn did not say a word to him. William called his name and tried to get his attention, but Shawn ignored him. Although Shawn was ignoring him. Will continued to tell hime about his plans, about his gun, about how he was going to do what Shawn taught him at a young age and get revenge. He wanted Shawn to confirm that he was doing the right thing by following the rules, but Shawn never answered.
Shawn is William's big brother and Buck's best friends. Shawn is the one who had taught William the rules and the one who had always been there for Will even though they did not always get along. Frick killed Buck, so Shawn killed Frick. This again proves what Uncle Mark said, it is never the end. Frick's actions have led to this very moment. Additionally, William seeks Shawn's approval. Will feels like he needs Shawn to understand and justify his plan of killing Riggs.
At this point in the elevator ride, both Shawn and William broke rule one. They cried. Everyone was silent. Shawn and Will sat in the elevator surrounded by their own thoughts. William wanted to leave the elevator more than anything in this moment. As the elevator opened, everyone left. Will stood alone int he elevator with tears in his eyes and a gun in his waistband. But right before he got out, Shawn finally spoke.
As they reach the final floor and the book ends with these two words, the audience is left with a cliff hanger. Will William choose to follow rule number three and kill Riggs. Or will he decide not to after hearing Buck and Dani question his ability, after hearing that his father killed the wrong man even though he was sure it was the right guy, after hearing that Shawn died because he followed rule number three and killed Frick. Will William kill Riggs or not?
