More Americans than ever before have asthma. It is one of this country’s most common and costly diseases.

What is Asthma?

Definition

Asthma is a respiratory condition marked by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing.

Symptoms

SYMPTOMS

  • shortness of breath
  • chest tightness or pain
  • wheezing when exhaling
  • feeling tired or weak when exercising
  • trouble sleeping

  • severe wheezing when breathing both in and out
  • coughing that won't stop
  • very rapid breathing
  • chest pain or pressure
  • tightened neck and chest muscles, called retractions
  • difficulty talking
  • feelings of anxiety or panic
  • pale, sweaty face
  • blue lips or fingernails
