The Context

The Context

  • Japan is a sismic country which oftenly endures earthquakes and tsunamis.
  • The last major one happened in March 2011 and caused the Fukuschima nuclear accident.

The results

The results

High efficiency system (prevented transport accidents), impressive reactivity.

Use of big data in the service of the people for a smart emergency response.

But:

It prioritizes big cities like Tokyo (better prepared).

It could not prevent Fukushima accident.

People denounced a lack of reliable news after 2011 catastrophe.

Communication networks are not enough desaster resilient.

Undertaken improvements:

  • Strengthen communication networks (building resilient stations).
  • Strengthen power plants.

Tokyo: a smart

energy city?

The hydrogen solution.

Tokyo: a smart

energy city?

The technology: how does it work?

The technology: how does it work?

  • Hydrogen fuel cells supply electricity by dihydrogen (H2) oxydation with air dioxygen (O2).
  • It can be used in a car powered by an electric engine.

  • It can supply buildings in electricity as well.

An Implementation in Tokyo.

Fuel cell housing

Fuel cell housing

  • ENE-farm project: partnership between Tokyo gas and government to equip between 150000 and 300000 houses with hydrogen fuell cells by 2020.
  • Huge subsidies ($ 200 million).
  • Sized to fit with appartment building standards.
  • Appartment buildings in Tokyo using this technology.
  • 100000 houses already fit out with it in Japan.

The breaktrhrough and its flaws.

The breaktrhrough and its flaws.

ENE-farm project proved the economic viability of hydrogen technology.

However the cost remain heavy ($15000 per unit).

High energy efficiency (90% with ENE-farm vs 50% with the grid).

But how hydrogen is produced?

With natural gas !!!

Less pollution (half minus CO2 emissions).

Why does Tokyo use hydrogen?

Why does Tokyo use hydrogen?

  • To communicate for the 2020 Olympic Games.

Why does Tokyo use hydrogen?

  • Other projects have been planned:
  • Hydrogen powered olympic village:
  • Fuel cells vehicles (6000 in Tokyo and 35 stations by 2020).
  • Communication campaign or a long term investment.
