The Science behind Supernovae
Presented by Ethan Hildebrandt
-When a star has reached the end of its life cycle it will begin to decompose. Decomposition of a star begins to take place when its fuel source of hydrogen or helium is depleted, and the can no longer withstand the immense gravity being pushed onto it from the surrounding mass of its outer layers.
-With nothing holding the outer layers from closing in on the core, the star collapses in on itself. This collapse happens almost instanaeously once the fuel has run out and the core cools down.
-What is left is a very dense core and a enormous cloud of hot gas that expands into the emptiness of space
