Langston Hughes in the Harlem Renaissance

Tristany Montoya

Mr. Eves - US History B

Mr. Hughes

Langston Hughes was considered a important writers during the Harlem Renaissance. Many of his works are still used today, helping clear the pavement for future African-American citizens in the United States. In the 1920s, him,

as well as many other artists of color

created an artistic movement, which

involved more black culture than

what was there already at the

time.

Intro

Langston Hughes was born February 1, 1902 in an African American neighborhood in Harlem, New York. His lifestyle and culture during this time was his primary inspiration to his later works. His young adult life was very much involved with literature & politics, later shaping those things for the future.

Along with being a writer, Hughes had his share of critics. Since his work was driven off of black America, he was considered possibly the most abused poet in America. Nevertheless, he continued on with his work, even using the backlash as inspiration on African American discrimination in America.

In his work, it's shown how strongly his passion for writing is. He portrayed his ideal opinions in his work, embracing how he was essentially a social political activist. He worked for peace for people like him, no matter what other people said about any of it. He never wrote about violence, which was very significant for this time period, but rather, a peaceful approach for the conflict in America.

Through his work, Hughes encouraged equality & embraced his African-American heritage. All throughout his career, he has been faced with backlash from critics of all colors. The harsh feedback he recieved allowed him to express himself more & show even more examples on what it is to truly be a person of color in America.
