Competitive Swimming. Four strokes, or styles of swimming, are contested at swimming meets: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Swimmers race a variety of distances, ranging from 25 yards or meters to 1600 yards. Each stroke has specific rules as to how swimmers may propel themselves through the water.

The oldest form of stroke used is the breaststroke. Ancient drawings and paintings found in Egypt depicting people swimming date back to 2500 BCE. Swimming became an amateur sport in the late part of the nineteenth century. Swimming first became an Olympic event in 1896.
