Us humans have become ignorant to the environment, and we only care about our society’s growth and self prosper.
- Page 936 “Hidden from immediate view in the butterfly-bright meadow, in the dusky thicket, in the oak and holly wood, are the surveyors’ stakes, for someone wants to build a mall exactly there-some gas stations and supermarkets…”. This is a prime example because it shows the beauty of nature and how the “surveyors” don’t care about it at all.
Save the Whales, Screw the Shrimp, was written in the 1990’s which was at the very beginning of climate change movements and was well into environmental protection movements. With Richard Nixon passing environmental acts, like the Clean Air Act, the 1970s were already focused on protecting the environment, therefore this essay sort of hops on the moving train.
This essay can be applied to anyone who engages within today’s society, in which interaction with the environment is a very controversial and prevalent topic. And more importantly, consumers of the information that is created by the people who view and analyze information about nature today.
The essay is trying to bring the world to a realization, that not everything may be the way it seems and the world they live in is completely shaped by how they interact with the environment.
-One example of this is on page 935- “that your greed and vanities and quest for self-fulfillment have been catered to far too much.”
The author of the essay, Joy Williams primarily wrote novels and short stories in which she was very successful writing about failures in America from different perspectives. This makes sense in why she writes about the environment as it is a failure of the world to let it fall to the point that it is.
Williams uses a unique approach to the topic, which she feels negatively about, by using a large amount of sarcasm. Sarcasm is a very effective use of rhetoric because it appeals to the emotional side of the reader by using humor, and also getting the point across Also, she makes the reader feel guilty all throughout the essay.
As mentioned previously in occasion this is near the beginning of a moving train for stabilizing the environment and she has noticed the world around her, the world of failing ecosystems, businesses’ greed, and lack of human consideration.
