Spanish American War Timeline

After The War

There had been alot of tension between Spain and the US, but the explosion of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor is what fired us to go to war.

February 15,1898

Yellow Journalism

The sinking of the USS Maine is a good example of how Yellow Journalism impacted the United States. It spread news of the sinking and quickly rallied the support of the citizens in aiding the Cubans because they felt it was similar to the American Revolution.

The American Senate declared war on Spain the day after Spain declares war on the United States.

April 25, 1898

The city of Santaigo surrendered to General William Shafter under the leadership of General Toral. This sacred day is forever reminded by a tree which is called the Santiago Surrender Tree and is protected by the ABMC.

July 17, 1898

The original tree died but a new one was planted in its place in 1998 during the centennial ceremonies.

Fun Fact

Spain signs the armstice. This was called the "Protocol of Peace" signaled the end of the war and showed the United States being a World Power. Spain relenquished control over Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.

August 12, 1898

The first major battle of the Spanish American War takes place in Manilla Bay. The spanish take defeat from U.S. Commodore Dewey and his forces.

May 1, 1898

The United States troups capture Manila. Spanish troups were surrounded and at first declined negotiations for surrender until they realized that fighting back would be useless.

August 13, 1898

The Cubans start their struggle of independence from Spain.

Effect

America gets involved in this struggle so they can protect their businesses and trade that they have in Cuba. Not to mention they also wanted to protect their citizens that resided in Cuba.

American troups landed in Cuba. The men are led by General William Shafter. They land on Daiquiri, Cuba as recommended by General Garcia because of its ports and close proximity to fresh water.

June 22, 1898

The battle of Santiago is fought. Americans won this battle and Spains Caribbean fleet is destroyed.

July 3, 1898

July 3, 1898 in the United States is also the day Hawaii is annexed into the United States for their naval base to aid in the Spanish American War.

Spain declares war on the United States for their involvement in aiding the Cubans and Filipinos in their fight for independence.

April 24, 1898

1902

The United States withdraws its troups from Cuba. This oocured because Cuba agreed to the Platt Amendment which allowed the US to intervene in Cuban affairs if needed and if Cuba leased land to the US for naval bases.

The Philippines declaires itself an independent republic that leads to a guerilla war that lasted from Febuary 1899 until July of 1902.

January 23, 1899

The Treaty of Paris is signed by Spain. Under this agreement Cuba is declared independent and the United States gains control of Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

December 10, 1898

July 1, 1898

The battle of San Juan Hill takes place. United states troups including Teddy Roosevelts Rough Riders defeat the Spanish close to the place where they have their strong hold, Santiago de Cuba.

The Rough Riders, AKA Teddy Roosevelts Rough Riders, was a group of about 1,200 men whom were under the leadership of Teddy Roosevelt himself. They were a voluntary regiment and one of the first troups to land in Cuba.

Puerto Ricans are given American Citizenship. This is because of the Jones-Shafroth Act in which allowed Puerto Ricans to have American Citizenship without rescinding their Puerto Rican Citizenship
