General Ecology Concept Map

By: Tejasvi Subramanya

Species

A group of organisms that can

reproduce amongst one another

Biotic

Living components of an ecosystem

Populations

The total number of organisms in a defined area or location

Ex. There are 500 people in the town of greensville

Populations

Ecosystem

Ecosystem

A geographic area in which plants, animals, and other organisms come together.

Examples: Grassland Ecosystems, Tropical Rainforest Ecosystems, Temperate Forest Ecosystems Taiga Ecosystems, Desert Ecosystems, Tundra Ecosystems, Freshwater Ecosystems, Marine Ecosystems.

Biosphere

Worldwide sum of all ecosystems. Contains all of life.

Divided into tundra, grassland, forests, deserts, and aquatic biomes.

Biosphere

Weather/climate

Weather- Short-term changes in atmosphere

Climate- Long-term description of an areas weather

Abiotic

non-living components of an ecosystem

Temperature

Physical quantity that describes how hot or how cold a particular area is.

Can be expressed in Farenhite, Celsius, and Kelvin

Usually measured by thermometer or langmuir probe

Temperature

Percipitation

Pericipitation

Liquid or fozen water that forms in the atmosphere and falls down on to earth

Are usually caused because of condensation of water vapor when particles collide

Percipitation usually measured in milimeters using technology such as the standard gauge, the tipping bucket gauge and the weighing gauge

Topography

Topography

Is the study of the forms and features of land surfaces.

Topography usually involves mathematical assessments of elevation and streamflow

Topography makes use of technology such as GPS, EDM, and TST.
