Additional Elements

  • MLA Header & Heading
  • Title
  • Introduction & Conclusion
  • A descriptive annotation of the story you are writing about

Your Introduction should...

B

  • clearly state your thesis (what you think the story is doing/discussing)
  • explain what you needed to research in order to support your thesis
  • detail your research methods

Example

Example

Pastoralia examines the hypocrisies and contradiciton of corporate culture. The story uses memos, jargon, employee evaluations, and other hallmarks of business to absurd effect by juxtaposing them with a mock-primative, theme-park enviornment and dramatic personal conflicts. To develop a deeper understanding of corporate culture in general, and theme parks in particular, I researched specific theme parks (Disney World, Six Flags) and the psychology of corporate structure. I also read about work life balance as this was one of the main aspects of corporate culture the story addressed.

Now it's your turn!

Write an introduction that...

  • States your thesis
  • Clarifies your thesis
  • Explains what research is needed

A

Your concusion should...

  • Summarize your research
  • Discuss the impact your rearch had on your argument. (Don't say it didn't).

Example

Researching real examples of corporate policies and culture revealed that much of what seemed exaggerated in the story was actually quite realistic. The article "Behind the Project Screen" revealed that Disney in particular shares many policies and procedures similar to those encountered in Pastoralia. Before researching I intended to show that the story exagerated real aspects of corporate culture, but I found that its portrayal was actually quite authentic. As a result I will emphasize how accurate the story's portrayal of corporate culture is.

Now it's your turn!

Write a conclusion that...

  • Summarizes what you learned through researching
  • Relates that information to your thesis
  • Explores how the research has contextualized, refined, or contradicted your ideas.
