“The ancestor of every Action is a thought.”
⁃ Ralph Waldo Emerson.
As I stepped out of the flight and into Lahore, the brush of warm breeze on my face and the smell of the moist mud filled me with a satisfying sense of security. I was back in Pakistan. I had been away for a month working in a hospital in Washington DC. The pristine white flooring of the hospital, the scent of sanitiser infused in the chilled corridors and the immaculate health care protocols took me by complete turmoil and envy. I must say it wasn’t a pleasant time. I recalled my county’s wards, the helpless cries of patients, and the lack of proper protocols, which kept me disturbed at all hours. I had gone for an elective to help strengthen my skills and determination to give USMLE. But my plans took a completely unexpected turn. I was cognizant, more than ever, of how much I was needed back in Pakistan and how my efforts and work could change the course of Health care over the years.
Since that day, I have never been more grateful for the emotions I experienced and I haven’t let go of them since. They help me realise the gaps and loopholes in our systems and since that day I started looking for ways and opportunities where I could be useful. IFMSA-Pakistan had started to rekindle at that time in CMH-LC and it seemed like a ray of hope at a time when I was emotionally struggling given the dilapidated state of Pakistans’ healthcare system. This organisation was my chance at making the difference my heart yearned for. In the capacity of a medical student, I was brought in a basket of great like-minded people. By digging deeper into the organisation I realised how far I could reach. I soon realised IFMSA-Pakistan has exponential Potential, power, and capacity as a national Youth Force only if realised.
“The ancestor of every Action is a thought.”
⁃ Ralph Waldo Emerson.
My motivation was directed towards helping other like- minded people into the organisation by being a team member of the VPI. And Allah was grateful enough to grant me the position of VPI myself. As I transitioned from one role to another I cherished experiences like MM,19, and MM’20 only to realise at the end of the day how much room I still had back in my country and NMO.
Moving from various workshop to trainings to different meetings, I grasped all the knowledge and skills I could—those that were needed for me to hone my abilities me as a Healthcare professional and a Leader for my NMO. Working with different people from unique backgrounds and common goals have fostered in me the set of ethics and values that I did not possess previously. And being a VPI further gave me the opportunity to attract and assist like-minded people into the NMO in hope that these will be our change maker of today and tomorrow.
I have innumerous plans for the NMO and I will work well in my power for this Association to achieve my utopia. I shall work to achieve the Vision I have for IFMSA-Pakistan. “A Pakistan in which all medical students are mobilised and unite to spread and gain knowledge and skills and in the process work for the development of Pakistan.“ We are in the middle of unprecedented difficulty and unparalleled suffering. We have been through dark days of apprehension and anguish but I can say with confidence, courage, and self-reliance and by the grace of God we will surely emerge Triumphantly. Thus, I, Aliezeh Fatima Rai, one of IFMSA-Pakistan's Presidential Candidates shall always attempt to do justice to the countless humans that shed their Blood to bring us all in this Pure Land for a better tomorrow.
