Salem Witch Trials

The woman were accusing each other to protect themselves from being murdered. If they were accused they would be captured and hung.

About the trials

It was an group of young girls in Salem, Masschusetts that were claiming to be possessed by the devil. They would accuse other women of witchcraft who would then be killed.

When it started

They started in Salem Village, Massachusetts on March 1st, 1692. Where many people were executed for being accused of witchcraft. The numbers of people killed were over 20. Furthermore, 200 people practiced withcraft (the devils magic).

Mob mentality is defined as “the tendancy of the people in a group to think and behave in ways that conform with others in the group rather than as individuals”(Merrium-Webster). The Salem Witch Trials is an example of mob mentality because t he people of Salem joined the group of accusers in order to avoid being accused of being a witch themselves.

Mob mentality spread to neighboring communities, but eventually went away. Village leaders began to clear all accused individuals of witchcraft. The final case was cleared in 2001.
