Universal Solvent

Conductor of Electricity??

  • dissolves more substances than any other liquid
  • carries along valuable chemicals, minerals and nutrients everywhere it goes
  • even through the ground or our bodies!
  • Pure water does NOT conduct electricity.
  • However, you may find that water with dissolve salts can!
  • Most natural water has at least SOME salt dissolved within

Polarity

Properties of Water

Mariana Ruiz Villarreal | CK-12 Foundation

  • Water molecules are polar
  • partially positive charge on hydrogen atoms
  • partially negaitve charge on oxygen atoms
  • allows water to be attracted to many other different types of molecules!

  • Even salt dissolves in water
  • talbe salt, NaCl (sodium chloride) dissolves into Na+ and Cl- ions. These have full charges. Na+ has a positive charge and Cl- has a negative.
  • the paritlaly positive hydrogen atoms in water are attraced to the fully negative Cl- ions
  • the partially negative oxygen atoms in water are attracted to the fully positive Na+ ions

Cohesive Properties

Adhesive Properties

  • water mocules stick to one another through Hydrogen Bonds
  • partial positive hydrogen on one water molecule is attracted to partial negative oxygen on a neighboring water molecule
  • most cohesive chemical, except for metallic liquids!
  • Pure water has a pH of 7
  • not acidic
  • not basic
  • neutral!
  • Water can stick to other things, too!
  • It also has high surface tension.
  • This can cause capillary action
  • water moving UPwards ... think about the bottom of your pantt legs dragging on the ground in the snow. When you get inside, you may notice that your pant leg is wet nearly up to your knee
