Environmental Psychology

Info

Environmental Psychology could also be related to population and environmental psychology.

Video

The people who use environmental psychology are individuals that want to try and create more green environments, whether that be in parks, homes, workplaces, public spaces, buildings, neighborhoods, wilderness or just global scales. This field in psychology mainly focuses on the thoughts, attitudes and behaviors of individuals about their environment. The environment also influences the person by their specific environment they live in and the lifestyle they have.

  • Population and Environment Psychology became a product in the 1960s.
  • During that time they were focus on some major concerns that helped with aesthetic sense and the sense of ability to sustain human life.
  • Division 34 (Population And Environmental Psychology) is a product Of The 1960s and was strongly influenced By two social issues that were of concern which were the decade population growth and environmental degradation

What is Division 34?

  • These concern were the cause of the establishment of the two task forces.

The Two Task Forces developed by APA

  • The Task Force on Psychology, Family Planning, and Population Policy.
  • The Task Force on Environment and Behavior.

What are the two main task forces?

Major Theories/ Concepts

  • Geographical Determinism
  • Ecological Biology

(Will discuss more in other slide)

  • Behaviorism

  • Gestalt Psychology

Barbara Brown

  • Professor Brown's research interests includes the linkages between the the physical environment and human behavior, with special focus on the community design, health, sustainability and place attachment

Major Theorist

Her Current Research

  • focuses on the "complete street" which is an intervention that brought light rails, better sidewalks, ans bike lanes to an urban area.

Examples of findings

  • This gave her the opportunity to examine the influence of physical activity on Body Mass Index and introduces better health benefits

Behaviorism

  • Behaviorism is one of the most used theories throughout psychology
  • It is the theory of learning based on the idea that all behaviors are acquired through conditioning in which occurs through the interaction of the environment.

More Information

  • Behaviorism has been proven to be very effective throughout psychology
  • Shown below are different methods of how people can use behaviorism

How they use it?

Pseudoscience?

There is currently no evidence to support that environmental psychology has any signs of pseudoscience.

Critiques

Environmental science research is very one dimensional - The research that is out there basically focuses on the influences we have on the environment and vice versa

Misconceptions

Environmental psychology quotes from the public

  • People have a common understanding of environmental psychology
  • It is understood that our surroundings influence us and we influence our surrounding
  • Most people do not think of the term environmental psychology when something is bothering them in their environment
  • The person will look for causes to their problem but may not realize it is simply their environment they are in

People's comments on Environmental Psychology

"I feel happier in a calm and peaceful space that is relaxing, too much ‘stuff’ is stressful and counterproductive, why keep things when you cant find them when you need them?

too much visual clutter leads to mental clutter." -Katherine Glass

"This is an interesting question for me also and I thank you for asking it. I am interested in environmental psychology as well although I do not know a lot about it" -Tim Howell, Part Time Graduate Student in Psychology, Christian, Engineer, Technologist

"Most people think they can only change their environment when they have accomplished their goals.

The truth is, the environment comes before the goals because environment creates the outcomes."

-Dean Yeong

"It is essential to understand the interaction of individuals as well as societies with their environment. Without EnvPsych we would not be able to determine the perception of environmental changes like the climate extremisation" -Dirk Patze, Dipl.-Ing. Environmental Engineering

Future Research

The research that has been done has been very helpful for people to understand this newer concept. Now any future research that is conducted needs to go more in-depth and focus more on details.

Future Questions

Focus of future research

  • How can the negative effects from a negative environment be controlled in order to eliminate psychological harm to a person?

  • What skills or strategies needs to be adapted in order to prevent people having a negative influence on the environment around them?

  • What are the effects of an environment in which one person perceives it as a negative environment and the other perceives it as positive environment?
