Population Pressures

  • In 1798 Thomas Malthus wrote an essay on the principle of population. It states that human population increased geometrically, while food supply increased arithmetically.

  • The essay supported the belief that the earth can only support a limited amount of people known as the CARRYING CAPACITY.

  • If the human species fails to control their population war, famine, and disease will do it for them

In Defence of Malthus

  • Some disagree with Malthus' theory of mass starvation

  • Malthus points out 2 aspects of modern technological advancements to back up his theory

The 2 aspects consist of...

1. Humans tend to do more with the same resources

2. Humans take more resources

Population Pressures and Built Environments

Impacts of Increasing Population

  • The need for food can force fishers and farmers to over exploit fragile ecosystems

  • Rapid urbanization can lead to poorly planned and poorly sanitated settlements

  • Increased population density and accompanying economic activity, threaten habitat, increase pollution, and risk the introduction of invasive species

  • Increased population is linked to increased consumption of earths resources.

Built Environments

Built environment: The percentage of the world population living in urban areas.

City of Toronto

Components Of the built environment consist of...

  • Shelter

  • Food and Water

  • Sewage systems in place

  • Design of the Community

  • Land uses designated for each part of the community

  • Vehicles

What is Public Infrastructure?

Public infrastructure is the publicly owned assets that supply an economy with road, water supply, waste disposal, power supplies, sewers etc.

Municipal Governments are required to maintain and provide the components of the built environment. They are also required to help create sustainable communities.

What Classifies an area as Urban?

For an area to be considered urban, it must have a population of at least 1000 and no fewer then 400 people per square kilometer.

Services in the Built Environment

Factors that influence the scope of things provided and the methods of delivering those services include...

* The physical area for which the municipality is responsible as well as that areas geographic characteristics such as topography and climate.

* The size of the population

* The money available

Infrastructure projects in Canada

In January 2009 Canadian federal budgets announced budgets for infrastructure projects to combat a world wide economic crisis.

What is waste water?

A complex mixture of human waste, suspended solids, debris, and a variety of chemicals that come from residential, commercial and industrial activities.

Most of the budget was for municipal water and waste water facilities.
