Understanding our Government

Federal

Senator

Every state is allotted 2 national senators giving this congressional branch 100 members. The senate, much like the house, introduces legislation that is voted on and if passed by simple majority, is sent to the house and if passed by simple majority, is then sent to the president for signing. The president may veto the legislation making it so the house and the senate must have a super majority to override the veto and enact said policy.

Senator

The current national senators from Washington state are Maria Cantwell & Patty Murray.

Representative

The US Census occurs every 10 years and determines how many congressional districts a state/region has based off of its population. Congress has capped the total number of representatives to 435 through legislation. Unlike the senate, representatives come from more regions then just states, the house allots 5 delegates to the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Much like the senate, the house introduces legislation and once passed by a simple majority bounces it to the senate and if the senate passes it by simple majority, congress sends it to the president to sign into law.

The position also functions as the president of the state senate, introducing and pushing for legislation.
