Quadriceps Strains

Intro

~A quadriceps strain occurs when the muscles are placed under more force than they can withstand causing the muscle fibers,tendons or both to tear away from the bone

~A quadriceps muscle strain is an acute tearing injury.

~Acute strain injuries commonly occur in sports such as soccer, football and rugby.

~ Tears to the quadriceps muscles usually occurs when sprinting,jumping and kicking

~ The latin translation of quadriceps is "four headed"

Quadriceps muscle

~The quadriceps are located infront of the thigh and consist of four muscle

~Rectus femoris (blue), Vastus Lateralis (yellow), Vastus Intermedius (green), Vastus Medialis (Red)

~These muscles are used in activites such as walking and running which makes them prone to tears and reptures

~ Rectus femoris, 2 origins anterior inferior and spine of the pelvis. Insertion- common insertion tendon

Signs & Symptoms

~ Brusing

~ Inability to bend knee

~ Difficulty walking due to the knee giving out

~Tightness in the quad

~Swelling

~Sharp pain when jumping,kicking or walking

~ Sudden decleration of the leg. ex: kicking

~Violent contraction or reptitive function of the muscle

~Rapid decleration of an overstreched muscle by qickly change of direction

Mechansim of injury

Special Test

The Ely's test is used to asses rectus femoris spasticity or tightness.

Kendall Test

The kendall test asses the tightness of the rectus femoris muscle

Treatment

~It takes at least 6 weeks or more for a sprain to heal

~ RICE methond, Rest, Ice,Compression and Evaluation prevents worsening the injury

~Static quad stretch : pull the front of the injured leg towards your butt until you can feel a gentle

~ Hip flexor stretch : kneel with one knee on the floor and the other foot out in front with the knee bent. push your hips forward and keep back upright
