Being safe

Safety

- Strong password - the longer it is the better

- Make sure to password protect your device, if you have social media apps on your phone

- Be selective with follow requests, if you don't know them, don't accept their follow request

- Click links with caution, social media accounts are regularly hacked

Why is this important?

Importance

All of these are so important because people can contact you through social media and have access to your personal information through your social media page. These precautions will decrease the likely hood of this to happening.

More specifically...

cyberbullying

Bullying

What is it? - Cyberbullying is bullying, but online. Social media makes it easier for people to bully someone behind a screen because it is less confrontational.

Be nice - Mean behavior is not okay, even online. You always treat others with respect and it's never okay to post hurtful or embarrassing things about someone.

The affects

If you are experiencing any type of cyberbullying there are many approaches on how to react:

Ignore - Sometimes bullies are encouraged by seeing a reaction.

Record - Easier to verify what happened and who the bully is.

Reach out - Get support when feeling upset by hurtful comments from a parent, teacher, counselor, or even a police officer.

Recognizing the problem

Phones have become a distraction and addiction for youth and teens. By recognizing this problem we can attempt to use it effectively, and not waste time.

How to reduce chances of being addicted

Reduce time

- Limited screen-time

- Have your device in a separate room at night

- Turn off push notifications

- Take distracting apps off your home screen

- Have a schedule to space out screen time

Mental Health

- 14-17-year-old children with high levels of screen time were more than twice likely to ever have been diagnosed with depression or anxiety

- Teenagers who spend 3 hours/day or more on devices are 35% more likely or 5 hours/day are 71% more likely to have a risk of suicide than those who spend less than 1 hour/day
