The Great Famine

  • Also called the Great Hunger, from 1845-1852, was period of mass starvation and disease in Ireland
  • During The Great Famine, Sligo served as a significant emigration transit port. More than 11,000 people left the country through the port in 1846 alone (Irish Family History Foundation, n.d)
  • Over 52,000 Sligo residents either died from starvation or illness within the years, or left the city due to emigration, making it one of the worst-hit areas (Sligo Town, n.d.)

Sligo Abbey

  • Known by another name, "Dominican Friary"
  • It was established in the middle of the 13th century and functioned as a center for the community in addition to a place of worship, particularly for displaced landowners
  • Within its walls, Dominican monks lived a life of prayer, study, and community service. For centuries, the abbey was a crucial component of the local community's spiritual and cultural life
  • The high altar from the 15th century remains the sole surviving example in any Irish monastic church

  • Sligo is also known as "Yeat Country" in honor of a famous Ireland poet William Butler Yeats

Devil's Chimmey

  • Based on the World Waterfall database, Ireland's tallest waterfall is Devil's Chimney
  • The best time to see Devil's Chimney in its full beauty is during a fifty-minute stroll, which occurs only after heavy rains
  • The Irish name, Sruth in Aghaidh An Aird, means ‘stream against the height’, when it is wet and the wind blows from the south, the waterfall is blown up and back over the cliff – hence the name Devil’s Chimney

Benbulben Mountain

  • Benbulben is also known by the Irish names Binn Ghulbain, Benbulbin, and Ben Bulben
  • It’s one of the most distinctive mountains in Ireland because of it's unique flat top
  • Height of 526 m (1,726 ft) tall
  • Easiest path will take about 2 hours
