Plot affects character

Lyddie is made to feel different, "other." This creates internal conflict in her, making her feel inferior to the other girls. She therefore has to prover herself by working harder than anyone else.

Man vs. Self

Conflict

Lyddie dreads going to work for 13 hours a day. She wonders if she is doing the right thing.

Man vs. Society

Young women and men all over the country are being taken advantage of and abused with poor working conditions. There are very little worker's rights in this time period. That's why Diana and some of the other girls are fighting against the corrupt and abusive system.

"Mr. Marsden!"

Conflict

Man vs. Man

Climax

Women workers

Man vs. Society

Workers, especially women, were discriminated against. They were held to the highest standard of morality, and anything that suggested "moral turpitude" or immoral behavior would be fired, or divorced or humiliated. A man's word was always valued over a woman's, as in Lyddie's dispute with Mr. Marsden.

Resolution

Lyddie is on her way to college in Ohio, the same one Betsy had her heart set on going to. She considers engaging Luke Stevens, but she needs to find her own path and take a risk, just as she has always done, before she gets "tied down."
