Located on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia, Vietnam borders China to the north, Loas and Cambodia to the west, and the South China Sea to the east.

Influences on Culture

Vietnamese cuisine is strongly influenced not only by neighboring countries, such as Laos, Cambodia, and China, but France aswell due to French colonial rule over Vietnam. Examples include types of rice noodles from China and baguettes from the French.

The number 5 also has influences on Vietnamese cuisine because of the philosophy of Wuxing, or the Five Agents.

The five flavors (sweet, salty, spicy, sour, bitter) and the nature of a dish (nutrients, colors, etc) are suppossed to represent the different natures of the Five Agents.

Vietnam grows many different crops, for both export and domestic consumption. Rice, corn, nuts and coffee are grown the most, but there are also a signifigant number of banana, coconut, and citrus plantations.
