After the civil war, many changes were made to ensure that African Americans were given equal rights. One of these changes was the 15th amendment, which gave voting rights to African Americans. This was an amazing step in the expansion of civil rights for African Americans. However, after reconstruction, many states found ways to deny African Americans their right to vote.
Due to Plessy v. Ferguson, segregation was made constitutional even in areas of public education. Linda Brown wanted to switch to a school that was closer to her home, yet was denied to enter. The school argued that they had the right to deny her due to the Plessy v. Ferguson case. Linda Brown's father argued back stating that it denied her daughter's right of equal protection under the law given by the 14th amendment. The Supreme Court ruled that segregation in schools was unconstitutional. This marked a huge step in stopping segregation and expanded the civil rights of African Americans.
The decision of Brown v. Education inspired many and kicked off the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This expanded the limitation of segregation by cutting it off from restaurants and other public settings. It prevented discrimination in job settings and work. It also limited the use of literacy tests and poll taxes so more African Americans and other minorities can have their right to vote. This act expanded the civil rights of many different groups of people and marked a big step for the civil rights of minorities.
After police forcibly enters the home of suspect Dollree Mapp, they find nothing except obscene materials that is against the law of Ohio. After being charged, Mapp's lawyer argued that the police had no search warrant and therefore do not have the right to convict her of something that was found off of an illegal search. The Supreme Court ruled that any evidence found in an illegal search will not be valid in court. This expanded the civil rights of many people, since it ensured that police could not force their way to find evidence.
