Māhū - Hawaii's Third Gender

Who are they?

The Māhū are males who show many feminine characteristics such as how they dress.

How do they identify?

The Mahu, are males who identify as both genders, and show both genders in how they appear.

How are the Mahu Present in society?

They are getting more attention in recent years due to the third gender movements.

How are the Mahu perceived?

The Mahu are seen in a negative way, the term Mahu has turned into a derogatory term for a male homosexual or a drag queen.

Are the Mahu oppressed?

They have been oppressed for about a hundred years now, since the christian missionaries arrived on the islands of Hawaii

Are the Mahu celebrated?

They used to be celebrated, in fact in traditional Hawaiian culture they are in fact kinda deified.

Before the British landed on the Hawaiian islands, the native Hawaiians were there, and believed in the Mahu who were spiritual and cultural guides. When the British showed up they implemented their customs and religion, and were appalled by men acting like women and wearing women's clothes.

How do the Hawaiians perceive gender?

The traditional Hawaiians see the Mahu, as the bearers of culture. they were the teachers of Hula, chant and passing oral stories to the next generation.
