Euripedes' most popular play was based around god themes in tragedies. Euripedes didn't like to do this, yet it earned him an award against Sophocles. The play was called Bacchae and was based around Dionysus. What stood out to this play was the fact that he could make a god the central character, yet he was about to maintain his "humanist approach to playwriting by making Dionysus appear to the people of the city of Thebes under the disguise of a common man". Due to this play, it allowed Dionysus to be added to one of the favorite playwrights. Resulting in him having a play in his honor along with other gods.
Another name for this festival is "Greater Dionysia"
In the 5th century, the festivals became more frequent. They would start around March and the festival lasted for about 5 days.
After the night of the festival, people would parade down the street for those that they've lost. They would then get front row seats to plays, one based around womanly emotions and then going back to manly humor. A day later, the festival would show five comedic plays to get over the emotional plays from days before.
Although Oedipus didn't win an award, it had the ability to win and it was one of the many popular plays written by Sophocles. Since the festival was in honor of the gods, it allowed Oedipus to be apart of the festival.
