TOMASITA

THE STORY OF TOMASITA

In the summer of 1988, Tomasita was the first patient to come in wearing a prosthesis already. It was around 15 years old and it had a laced up leather thigh corset and metal knee joints. It was the only leg she had ever worn. After her motor vehicle accident, her family sent her to Jamaica to have it made. It unfortunately caused pain and had done damage to Tomasita's limb. PHI decided to try and make a prosthetic for her. They made a foam lined self-suspending to see if she could tolerate it. Which worked for her. Since 1988, they have tried different styles for her, but she decided to stick with the one they originally made for her.
