Characteristics of Life

study of plants and animals that live in the

which have

also known as

Biology

The scientific study of life.

Biosphere

The part of the Earth in which life exists, including land, water, and air

Organism

Organisms

A individual life form (animal, human, plant, bacteria, etc.)

8 Characteristics

Characteristics of Life

Traits that all organisms must have to be considered living. There are 8 characteristics of life.

Made of Cells

Made of Cells

All organisms are made up of cells- or puzzle pieces that help the organism function (such as red blood cells and white blood cells)

DNA

DNA (dioxyribonucleicacid)

All cells contain DNA. DNA is a molecule that carries instructions for the characteristics of an organisms (DNA controls what traits you inherit)

Reproduce

Reproduce

All organisms reproduce sexually (with another organism- like bunnies) or asexually (by themselves- like bacteria)

Response to Stimuli

Response to Stimuli

An organism must react to changes in its environment (dropping a hot pan)

Stimulus

A signal to which an organism responds (sunflowers turning towards the sun)

Evolves

Evolves

All organisms change characteristics over several generations so that their species can survive (a type of moth that used to be light in color is now mainly dark in color due to pollution making it difficult for light colored moths to hide, therefore they were eaten by predators. The dark colored moths survived)

Adapts

All organisms have unique functions that allow them to live in a specific environment (cacti hold water in their trunks in the hot desert)

Obtains Energy

Obtains Energy

All organisms intake nutrients and use them to create energy (a plant takes in sunlight to help it grow)

Maintain Homeostasis

Maintain Homeostasis

All organisms regulate their internal environment (sweating to keep your body cool)

Metabolism

Metabolism

Chemical reactions that break down or build up materials in an organism (how quickly your body burns calories)

Grows and Develops

Grows and Develops

An organism gets larger and transforms (a baby grows into an adult, a seed grows into a plant, a frog egg grows into a frog)
