  • Symbolises the end of civilisation and the loss of innocence as it is the first deliberate killing on the island
  • Effectively conveys some of the main themes Golding explores throughout the novel

  • As Jack had split from the group as he isn't "going to play any longer... [and isn't] going to be a part of Ralph's lot", he has created his own tribe who aren't focused on rescue but more on hunting.
  • Everyone else has gone to "Jack's party", showing the beginning of the boys' descent into savagery and losing the values of democracy originally set in place.
  • Ralph, the democratic and fair leader, is lacking support while Jack, the merciless and powerhungry tyrant, has gained it.
