Stereotypes

and Dating

Explore the gender stereotypes regarding relationships we encounter through film and media.

Understand how these stereotypes effect personal dating relationships.

Stereotypes

Some of you might remember what this word means from our previous lesson, for those who don't, here is an explanation.

A stereotype is a category, or a group, that we put people into.

Gender Stereotypes:

  • Come from television, movies, song lyrics, parents, friends – everywhere!
  • Aren’t necessarily negative.
  • Box people into a specific way of acting rather than allowing them to be individuals.
  • Affect the way we think about interactions between and within genders.
  • We use them to create expectations about how dating partners should act.

Have you ever been stereotyped?

"Reflect on a situation when someone made a biased judgment about you or acted unfairly toward you because of your age, skin color, clothes you were wearing, gender, the way you speak, where you live, how much money your family has, or some other reason."

  • How did you know that you were being unfairly judged?
  • What words or actions were directed at you because of assumptions or stereotypes?
  • Why do you think those assumptions were made about you?
  • How did the experience make you feel?
  • How do you think you should have been treated in that situation?

Dating and Stereotypes

In another PSCD session we also discussed the topic of Dating.

Today we will be focusing on how Media can effect the stereotype we hold when dating someone.

Can you give some examples of the stereotypes you may hold because you were influenced by the Media?

Media

Some examples

In this movie there are 5 unrealistic things that happen in romantic movies.

What do you think about the clip? Have you ever seen any such scenes in movies you have watched?

How do you think these might effect your expectations of dating?

Scenario

When acting according to the stereotype, what do you think that the ending to this story will be?

Do you think it is fair?

Chris and Kiera have been dating for a few weeks and they are kind of keen on each other. They aren’t very skillful at creating a fair and supportive relationship because they both have bought into the stereotype boxes. He acts controlling. She behaves passively, always putting his wishes first.

Chris decides that the two of them will go to see a movie Friday night, Kiera has already made plans with her friends to go out for a pizza.

You have a chance to create an alternative ending, one where stereotypes do not count...how do you think this story would end?

If you or your dating partner feel as if you have to live up to these images, then there might be conflict, disappointment, and frustration. Gender stereotypes can even lead to abuse or harm.

When you’re in a relationship, think about your expectations for your dating partner. Are they reasonable and fair, or are your expectations based on gender stereotypes?
