Alien and Sedition Acts

The 4 Acts

1) An Act supplementary to and to amend the act, intituled, "An Act to establish an uniform rule of naturalization, and to repeal the act therefore passed on that subject" of June 18, 1798, "Naturalization Act of 1798"

2) An Act concerning aliens of June 25, 1798, "Alien Act"

3) An Act respecting alien enemies of July 6, 1798, "Alien Enemies Act"

4) An Act in addition to the act, entitled "An Act for the punishment of certain crimes against the United States" of July 14 1798, "Sedition Act"

Naturalization Act

  • This act increased the period of time aliens or immigrants had to live in America before becoming naturalized citizens.
  • amount of time was meant to be between 3-5 years to become a naturalized citizen.
  • This act increased the period from 5 years to 14 years.

Alien Friends Act

  • This act allowed the president to deport any non-citizen suspected of plotting against the country.
  • The president could deport non-citizens wether or not America was currently at war.
  • The act ended after two years and no people were ever deported under it.

Alien Enemies Act

  • This act allowed for any male citizens of an enemy nation to be detained, arrested, or deported.
  • Had America gone to war with France this act could have afffected the 25,000 french citizens living in the U.S.
  • Because the countries did not go to war this act was never used.

Sedition Act

  • The Sedition Act made writing, saying, or publishing any false or malicious statements about the government a crime.
  • The only people punished under this act were journalists of Democratic-Republican Newspapers

John Adams

  • Born in the Massachusettes Bay Colony in 1735
  • He passed the 4 Alien and Sedition acts to stop the French
  • He also served as a delegate from massachusettes to the continental congress from 1774-1777

Cause

XYZ Affairs

  • France seized American ships
  • France demanded $250,000
  • Adams said no and increased defense spending
  • Adams released dispatches but removed names of the french agents involved
  • Caused Americans to not trust french
  • This allowed Adams to pass the Alien and Sedition Acts

Cause

Effects

  • Not many people were ever arrested, detained, or deported because of these acts
  • The Naturalization act had the biggest effect because it made it extremley challenging to get citizenship
