Rationale
Terry Fox lost his right leg to cancer when he was 18 years old. He started a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research, beginning in Newfoundland on the East coast of Canada, and was to end at the Mile 0 marker in Victoria. Unfortunately, Terry Fox's journey ended tragically near the halfway mark when he fell ill and passed away from cancer. This relates to Canadian Identity because it shows how Canadians are selfless. Although Terry only had one leg, he had a goal of running 4 500 miles to raise money for cancer research, to stop the suffering of those he left behind when he was released from the cancer ward.
The Sixth Task
Location
Kejimkujik National Park,
Nova Scotia
Location
Tasks
Canoe across Kejimkujik Lake (‘tired muscles’ in Mi'kmaq). Then, search for 15 petroglyphs (stone carvings) throughout the area. A person in an Amazing Race shirt will come along and will make sure you have done all your tasks. When finished, you have until the evening to enjoy a hike, tour, or a dip in the nearby ocean. When you are done, you can fetch some dinner and set up camp; the person in the shirt will provide your tent and show you where to pitch it.
Your next envelope is hidden somewhere in your tent. In it, there's a ticket for a flight to Yukon Territory.
Rationale
While Kejimkujik has been a popular national park for more than four decades, its importance to the Mi’kmaq people is based on millennia of ancestral history. For many centuries, this particular part of Nova Scotia where Kejimkujik now lies was a place of encampments, fish weirs, hunting territories, portages, trails, and burial grounds. This national park is not only a place to enjoy the beauty of nature, but also a place to discover relics of the Mi'kmaq people.
