There is no one way that's the best way to collect information about student learning.
In every assessment there is 2 roles of teacher:
1. Designing an assessment.
2. Grading or scoring.
For standards-based assessment, the grade of a student is determined by whether he or she can demonstrate the achievement of a pre-defined standard. So it would be difficult to encourage students to cooperate and help each other in competitive situations while it would be natural for students to work together if they see benefits, as in the last bit of the story.
Under an outcome-based approach to student learning, the intended learning outcomes should determine assessment.
The intended learning outcome in this case is to develop racing skills. you need to be specific about what are the important elements
Is running fast important? Is crossing a river important? Is decision-making important (i.e., knowing where to run to leverage one’s strengths)? Is being persistent important? If you make it explicit, your students will be clearer about what to focus on.
Any assessment designs carry out some assumptions and will put some students at advantage and some at disadvantage. We cannot change a student’ natural talent, but we can provide scaffolding and support for him or her to complete the assessment task.
Groupwork, if well designed, can facilitate the development of collaborative skills but assessing groupwork has raised some challenges.
