In the beginning of the story, Albert's father brings Joey, a horse, home and tells Albert to train Joey to pull a plow. Albert's father needs money to pay their mortgage so he sells Joey to the army. The army trains Joey to be a cavalry horse. Joey gets a rider named Captain Nicholls. Joey meets Topthorn on the front line of battle. Captain Nichols, gets shot and dies. Joey gets a new rider named Trooper Warren.
In the middle of the story, Trooper Warren, Captain Stuart, Joey, and Topthorn get captured by the Germans. Joey and Topthorn are kept in Emilie and her grandfather's barn. Emilie and her grandfather were given Joey and Topthorn because the Germans did not need them anymore. One day, the German soldiers came back for Joey and Topthorn so they could pull a gun and later an ammunition cart. Then one autumn day Joey and Topthorn were walking up a hill and Topthorn stumbled, did not get back up, and died. Friedrich dies when he tries to pull Joey away from Topthorn during the shelling by the enemy. Joey stays by both Topthorn and Friedrich but in the morning tanks come out of the woods and Joey runs, gets his leg stuck in a crater with an invisible coil of barbed wire, and tears his skin when he tries to get it out.
At the end of the story, Joey ends up in the veterinary hospital where Albert now works, after a Welshman wins him in a coin toss. Joey later developed tetanus but survived and was used to pull the veterinary cart after he got stronger. David died one day when he was driving the veterinary cart and a stray shell hit him. The war was finally over and the British won but all of the horses at the veterinary hospital needed to be auctioned off. The soldiers put their money together to buy Joey. At the auction, an old man, Emilie's grandfather, outbid the soldiers and bought Joey. After the auction they talked with Emilie's grandfather and he said he would sell Joey to Albert for one English penny and a solemn promise to love and keep Joey safe.
The war keeps splitting up Joey and his owners/caretakers.
The war ends and Joey goes back to Albert's farm.
The main idea of War Horse is you must play your part in a team because in war every person must do their part. The horses were very important in the war. If the horses were not there then there would be no guns, ammunition, cavalry, ambulances, or water for the troops.
Rating and Recommendation
I rate this book a 10/10 because I enjoy page turning books with a good amount of action. I kept reading to see what other adventures Joey would get into. I also like historical books. If you like books like this kind of book you will definitely like War Horse.
