PROCESS SAFETY
VS
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY
WHAT IS PROCESS SAFETY?
Process Safety concerned with preventing extreme safety issues that arise in facilities that deal with dangerous materials, such as chemicals, gases, and oil by making sure that facilities are well designed, safely operated and properly maintained.
WHAT IS PROCESS SAFETY?
PROCESS SAFETY
- Deals with those that arise from major hazards, multiple fatalities and/or major environmental damage.
- Considered the result of a wide range of technical, management and operational systems working together to achieve the desired outcome. When desired outcome is not achieved, a process safety incident occurs.
- Typically give rise to low frequency high consequence events such as loss of containment, fire and explosions.
WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY?
WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY?
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY is multidisciplinary field, strictly concerned with the safety, health and welfare of people at work (sometimes called personnel safety)
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY
- Sometimes referred to as “hard hat safety” due to its concern with topics such as personal protective equipment (PPE), noise exposure, and slips, trips, and falls.
- Focused on the safety of employees.
- Develops Health and Safety policies and procedures and liaises with the Health and Safety Executive and other governing bodies

Goal
Goal
Occupational Safety
- To protect personnel from injury and illness
- The outcomes include equipment and operational integrity and lower incident costs
Process Safety
- To protect capital assets and environment
- The outcomes include safety of personnel ( the personal injury / human loss potential on process safety incidents are typically high compared to personal safety incidents.)
Incident Frequency
- Incident happen at a lower frequency.
- Occur on a much larger scale – fires, explosions and toxic releases.
- Incidents happen at a higher frequency.
- Incidents with smaller scale, typically only involve a limited number of people that usually do not extend beyond a company’s employees and the employees’ immediate family.
Incident Frequency
Prevent Hazardous Release
Prevent Hazardous Release
- Includes the prevention of unintentional releases of chemicals, energy or other hazardous material
- Generally refers to classic health and safety, normally associated with the prevention of trips, slips and falls.
Protect Everyone
- Protects workers and the public

Deals with Major Hazards
Deals with Major Hazards
- Addresses major hazards that are more likely to result in major incidents with big consequences.
- Addresses incidents involving personal safety at an individual level with small consequences such as cuts and broken bones.
High Level Support
- Focuses on educating the staff, where operators and workers can bring about change.
- Focuses on educating the mangement. Process safety is reliant the management and board understand its importance and implementing the improvements required to guarantee culture changes.
High Level Support
Participation
Participation
- Should be on the agenda at all board meetings.
- Should be on the agenda at team meetings. focusing on changing an individual behaviors.
Expenses
- More expensive to implement. The training of process safety is more extensive and highly technical.

Changing Systems
- Focuses on changing an individual behaviors.
- Focuses on changing system design in which behavior occurs rather than bringing in new equipment

OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY
- Prevention of a series of incidents
- Occupational Safety incidents would affct personal safety of an employee or a few the colleagues
Humans, Environment and Business
Human, Environment and Business
- Considers consequences at a human level only
- Considers the consequences of accidents at the human, environmental and business level
