What is a Coming of Age Film

and Early Renditions

*Coming of Age Films are often called “Teen Films”, which usually follows the protagonist as they transition from childhood to adulthood.

*Usually these films center around a critical stage in the young person's life, Ex: First Relationship, Leaving home, Graduating High School.

The First Coming of Age Films were usually adaptation of well known books such as Little Women & Wizard of Oz.

In the 80’s Teen Dramas became a very popular genre due to director John Hughes releasing a series of coming of age films throughout the decade

Ex: The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller's Day off.

Themes of Coming of Age Films

Central Protagonist : Usually a young person or teenager facing some sort of physical or emotional challenge.

Theme of Growth: The character or main protagonist matures, through adversity faced throughout the film.

Teen Issues: Friendship dynamics, love and relationships, mental health, family conflict and social pressure are examples.

Setting: Often times set in a high school, small town or neighborhood, on a trip/vacation.

Modern Day Coming of Age Films and Key Characteristics

Recent coming of age films have started to explore the development of characters with diverse backgrounds, as in Boyz in the Hood (1991), Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) , Moonlight (2016) and Lady Bird (2017).
