South Asian Canadians

South Asian Canadians are a big group of people from the southern part of Asia that immigrated to Canada in the 1900's. In 1903, the first south Asians, most of them were Sikhs who had heard of Canada from British Indian troops in Hong Kong. Most South Asian Canadians are immigrants or descendants of immigrants from countries and territories like Afghanistan, bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

TOPIC 4

What was daily life like?

Daily life for the immigrants in the early 1900's was hard escpecially for the sikh's, hindu's and muslim's because they were constantly being judged because of their cultures and the clothes they wore. It wasn't until the late 1900's that south asians could walk around in kurti/kurta pajama's without the fear of being judged by the society. Now new laws have been reinforced and people of all races and ethnicities can leave their house wearing traditional clothes and the only comments that they receive are compliments.

Struggles and triumphs

Back then, many south asians faced trouble getting jobs because not many companies were willing to hire immigrants no matter how skilled they were. Now, as i said before, the laws have changed and everyone can get a job wherever they want to as long as they're skilled individuals. Today, some of the wealthiest people in canada are south asian.1993 was an important year and a proud moment for south asians, because three South Asians were elected to the House of Commons in Ottawa for the first time. Gurbax Singh Malhi of Bramalea-Gore-Malton, Herb Dhaliwal of Vancouver South and Jag Bhaduria of Markham-Whitchurch-Stouffville, all members of the Liberal Party, who became the first South Asian Members of Parliament in Canada
