The River Styx was like a border between the land of living, the Underworld, the realm of dead souls. The River Styx would have to let each dead soul go to the Underworld. If the River Styx didn’t let a dead soul into the Underworld they couldn’t go. The River Styx had two other important purposes. When a god swore an oath by the River Styx, the oath took on greater power. Someone who broke the oath would punished very badly. If someone took a drink of water from the Styx would reveal if the were telling the truth or not.
