CENTRAL AS WE
KNOW IT: 2023
Follow our journey through the station. Click on the images to see what we saw, and know more about our thoughts and emotions concerning safety.
Corrugated Iron Roof is oppressive, low and claustrophobic
Tiling feels abrasive and bland
Lighting is white and harsh
Murals are faded and monochrome
Tunnel is hot and crowded, with limited ventilation, trapping disease
"It feels unsafe, it feels like I am dying"
Red pillars are an obstruction for vision
The red is distressing, colours like orange or yellow signify "warning" rather than "danger"
The roof is low and makes the space feel cramped
The office is not open but still marked, potential for a false sense of security
Long, thin tunnel creates sense of disorientation
Multiple corners for people to hide around
Less sense of worry because of route to platforms as escape
Dead end creates less options for people to hide
The platform was confusing with construction barriers blocking views around corners and of exits
More safe because of visible guards and staff for help
Multiple ways to exit the platform if being pursued
Wide, open space
Lots of natural light
Use of light natural materials like wood and carpet
Glass makes elements feel more open and less obtrusive
No sharp corners for people to hide behind
Easy to navigate through and find way
Overall a more safe feeling space
Tunel has noticeable security cameras, speakers and sprinklers.
No areas for people to hide in corners
Despite the construction, this area feels relatively comfortable
Wide, open area
Access to station guards, head office and amenities
Glass barriers deter loitering or hiding
The Grand Concourse is one of the most safe feeling areas in the station
We cannot speak to how this does/does not create a sense of safety, but believe it is important to acknowledge and share history, as it truly was
Like the Grand Concourse, there are wide, open spaces, high ceilings and lots of light, both natural and artificial
Station workers are present
Multiple exits, both to other areas of the station and outside the station
High amount of visible security cameras act as a deterrent and increase feelings of safety
The passageway is well lit, but construction does obstruct views of corners and elevators
