What does each part of the brain control?

Cerebral Cortex

-largest part of the human brain

-takes up most of the brain's outer area

-made up of left/right sides which is divided into 4 lobes (frontal, temporal ,parietal and occipital.

-receives and interprets sensory information, holds memories, contains centres that initiate movement

Limbic System

-network of structures under the cerebral cortex

-involved in emotion, motivation, mood and sensations

-directly connects with regions in the cerebral cortex, cerebellum and brain stem.

Cerebellum

-combines info from vestibular system to identify position and movement

-co ordinates limb movements

Brain Stem

-located at the base of the brain and top of the spinal cord

-controls heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, urination, movement of the limbs.

How do early positive experiences foster healthy brain development?

Positive social experiences (such as singing, reading, peek a boo) as well as good nutrition and nurturing environments play a key role in healthy brain development. These positive interactions and environments affect learning, health, mental health, and behaviour making them crucial to the early years.

How do negative experiences affect brain development?

Negative experiences in the early years are proven to have either temporary or life-long lasting affects on children. Toxic stress such as abuse or neglect, and stressors such as meeting people for the first time can all affect brain development.
