On April 2005, because of a growing political crisis and protests against the Government, the then President Gutiérrez declared a state of emergency in Quito then he escaped and lost the power.

In 2006, after a decade of deep institutional instability, Ecuador chose as president an economist, in a few months, crowned the head of the Alianza PAIS movement. Rafael Correa, was Minister of Economy in 2005 and triumphed with his project of to refound the Ecuadorian State.
