History of Cheese in Korea

Cheese was introduced to South Korea in 1959 by a Belgian missionary, who came to Imsil County to help people surviving the Korean War.

The missionary settled in Korea and raised goats and made cheese from goats milk. He helped start off the domestic Korean cheese production in Imsil County by teaching the locals how to make cheese.

Culture

This marked the appearance of cheese in the Korean diet as cheese is not a component in traditional Korean cooking. Although from there on out, cheese found its way through Korean Cuisine and is now a popular part of Korean Street food.

Imsil is now the center of cheese production for all of Korea.

Cheese Park

Now in the birthplace of Korean cheese, Imsil has its very own cheese themed park.

  • The 32- acre park first opened in 2004, and is full of various cheese themed buildings and park structures.
  • The park has a few “cheese experience” centers where you can make cheese, a milk processing factory, a local specialty shop, two restaurants, and a science lab that researches different methods for making the best cheese

Cheese and Street Food

  • As cheese is becoming more popular it is being incorporated into many different street foods
  • Adding cheese as a topping: seafood, bbq, tteokbokki
  • Cheese as the main ingredient: cheese corndogs, grilled cheese skewers
  • Adding cheese to pre-existing foods: cheese kimbap, cheese donkatsu
  • Cheese also is used to alleviate spice, as dairy can help counteract spice.
  • Putting cheese on spicy ramen and tteokbokki

South Korea’s Single Test for COVID-19 + Flu

  • Health officials in South Korea have approved a new test to detect both COVID-19 and seasonal influenza from the same samples
  • The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency reports most of the the new cases in the densely populated Seoul metropolitan area
  • This test is very convenient, as patients can have a diagnosis for both viruses in only three to six hours
  • The new test targets genes that are specific to both COVID-19 and seasonal flu
  • Laboratories use machines to amplify genetic materials so that even tiny quantities of the virus could be detected.
