Cheese was introduced to South Korea in 1959 by a Belgian missionary, who came to Imsil County to help people surviving the Korean War.
The missionary settled in Korea and raised goats and made cheese from goats milk. He helped start off the domestic Korean cheese production in Imsil County by teaching the locals how to make cheese.
This marked the appearance of cheese in the Korean diet as cheese is not a component in traditional Korean cooking. Although from there on out, cheese found its way through Korean Cuisine and is now a popular part of Korean Street food.
Imsil is now the center of cheese production for all of Korea.
Now in the birthplace of Korean cheese, Imsil has its very own cheese themed park.
