- Any open network ports are a potential vulnerability that can be expoited to spread malware and access data.
- Firewalls will block these ports but if poorly configured will still leave the network vulnerable.
- External storage devices can be used to bring malware inside a network that can then spread throughout the network infecting other devices connected.

- File permission & priviliges will control who can access what data and can perform what actions.
- If staff access is not restricted, this makes the user login capable of causing a lot of damage.
- Password policies define rules for setting passwords by system users.
- If good password policies are not enforced then user passwords may be vulnerable to hacking.

- Software from untrustworthy sources, including downloaded software, may contain malware.
- Illegal copies of software may also be contain malware. Also, they won't have access to official security patches.
- Even legitimate software may be vulnerable to threats to due to coding errors.
- SQL injection - where SQL code can be enterd into a input field and run against the database.
- Zero-day vulnerabilities - a flaw in the software that is unknown to the developer.

- Using unsupported operating systems means there will no longer be updates, including security patches.
- This means any exploits identified will not corrected by the developer.
- Additionally if a supported operating system is not regularly updated then there will be many vulnerabilities available for malicious user to exploit.
