A cell in Salem jail, that fall. At the back is a high barred window; near it, a great, heavy door. Along the walls are two benches.

The place is in darkness but for the moonlight seeping through the bars. It appears empty. Presently footsteps are heard coming down a corridor beyond the wall, keys rattle, and the door swings open. MARSHALL HERRICK enters with a lantern.

He is nearly drunk, and heavy-footed. He goes to a bench and nudges a bundle of rags lying on it.

Exposition.

Exposition

Herrick removing Tituba and Sarah Good from a jail cell so the court officials can hold a meeting there. Reverend Hale and Reverend Parris are off praying with the other condemned prisoners, which is unsettling to Danforth and Hathorne.

Rising Action

Paris is againist the killing, while danforth wants to continue. Hale is trying to get John to confess.

Climax

Hale brings in Johns wife to convince him to plead either gulity or innocent.

Falling Action

Johns wife talks to him and tells him how she feels. He wants to confess then does it just to take it back. John refuses because he just wants to free himself from self-hatred.

Elisabeth leaves the jail after agreeing with John and letting him take back his confession.
