Savannah River Basin

Location

  • Savannah River Basin is located slightly on the bottom of North Carolina in the Mountain area, and the entire border between Georgia and South Carolina, reaching both states.
  • Chattooga, Tallulah, and Seneca are three main tributaries that flow into the main Savannah River.

  • 108 fish species live in the Savannah river and represent 36 families
  • The federally-endangered short-nosed sturgeon has only 3,000 currently living in the Savannah river
  • The Robust Redhorse, which was previously thought to be extinct, is now a state-endangered species, and is only found in the Savannah River Basin

  • The Purple Gallinule is a beautifully colored bird that can be found walking on vegetation on top of the water, it comes to the river during the summer to breed
  • The Common Gallinule is the more common and less colorful cousin of the Purple Gallinule, it can be found at the river year-round
  • The Bobcat is a nocturanal creature that has been spotted multiple different places at multiple different times over the year around the river basin, they are ussually around the size of a house cat

  • The Bluegill is the most common of all the sunfish and are found throughout The U.S. and northern Mexico
  • The Blue Crab, otherwise known as the Chesapeake blue crab or the Atlantic blue crab, is a strong-swimmer, largely due to it's five legs, which are shaped like paddles
  • The Largemouth Bass is the United States most popular fish the catch, a key characteristic is a line of dark splotches on both sides

Three Land Plants in the Savannah River Basin are Bald Cypress, which is a common tree to southern swamps, the black gum, also known as the black tupelo is a very colorful tree with bright and vibrant colors, and rocky shoals spider lily, a rare flower that blooms during the summer along the river

Three Water Plants in the Savannah River Basin are Nyssa Aquatica, was named after the Greek goddess for lakes and rivers and can be characterized by its large base and long, narrow trunk, water hyacinth, which are removed by hand, and water primrose, can be found in shallow marshes, ponds, and ditches

  • Savannah and Augusta are two major cities along the Savannah river

  • There is a developing site that makes the main parts of nuclear weapons plus more, a nuclear fuel and target fabrication facility, and two chemical separation plants
  • The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission addressed this problem on their official website.
  • There are wildlife preserves, especially for the Savannah river, and waste management facilities near the river and the nuclear facilities. DOE is taking measures to clean the river and take care of the nuclear waste.
