Cows
Cows originated in the Eastern Hemisphere in the subcontinent of India. They were domesticated about 10,000 years ago from aurochs by ancient people.
Cows started spreading to the western hemisphere on Columbus second voyage in 1493. English and Spanish people spread cows to their respective colonies. Spanish people throughout Florida and Mexico. English people thoughout Virginia, Massachusetts, Delaware, New York, New Hampshire and other English colonies.
Cows were very profitable since they were a primarily source of food, it provided milk and beef for people who were native to the Americas. It was also used for clothing, tents and shields.
Europeans were the ones profiting from trade since they were the ones selling the cows to the Native Americans
Native Americans especially Great Plain indians incorporated cows to their culture by using them as defensive armor for warriors. They were also used for clothing and tents. Taino Indians incorporated cows in labor practices by using them as fertilizer for crops, clear land for farming and were often used to pull plows and carts. Some tribes even developed specialized breeds that were suited for specific needs.
Cows had a great impact in the Americas, they brought new diseases to the New World and even changed culture. For instance they prevented the regrowth of native plants such as shrubs and trees. Beneath their hooves grasses from Africa would sprout, it is said that this grasses were introduced because of the slave ship bedding and this will make the native plants to dissapear. Diseases such as smallpox, measles, mumps and influenza spread as Europeans introduced domesticated animals including cows, to the New world.
