WHAT IS E-WASTE AND

E-WASTE RECYCLING ?

E-waste

1.Waste material from electrical or electronic devices are

termed as E-waste or Electronic waste.

2. Electronic goods which may be refurbished or recycled

in the future are also called E-waste.

3.E-waste recycling is the process

to make this discarded waste reusable

through different techniques.

E WASTE RECYCLING

E-waste recycling

1.Only 20%of the e-waste produced gets collected and recycled.

2.Roughly 40% of the waste is disposed off in landfills, which may contain toxic materials.

3.The rest of the waste is disposed off in other ways that may harm the environment.

TECHNIQUES OF E-WASTE

RECYCLING

1.Burning cable sheathing

2.Hydrometallurgical method (Leaching)

3.Mechanical shredding and separation

4.Methods to recycle Printed Circuit Boards

RECYCLING WIRES BY BURNING CABLE SHEATHING OR USING MACHINERY

1.Cable sheathing is burnt in order to obtain the

metal inside, mostly copper.

2.Open burning of cable sheathing produces harmful gases both to human health and the environment , hence some recycling companies use specially developed machinery for recycling waste wires.

HYDROMETALLURGICAL METHOD (LEACHING)

HYDROMETALLURGICAL METHOD

1.This method is used to obtain

metals from e waste.

2.Metal contents are dissolved in strong acid or alkalis.

This is followed by electro refining of

desired metals.

3.Commonly used leachants are aqua regia , nitric acid , sulphuric acid etc.

This method is considered dangerous due to the use of liquids having corrosive and poisonous nature.

MECHANICAL SHREDDING AND SEPARATION

1.Shredding facilitates the sorting and separation of plastics from metals

2.The separated metals can be reused after processing.

MECHANICAL SHREDDING AND SEPARATION

METHODS USED TO RECYCLE PRINTED CIRCUITS BOARDS(PCB)

METHODS USED TO RECYCLE PRINTED CIRCUITS BOARDS(PCB)

* Pyrolysis :

The PCBs are heated to a temperature high

enough to melt the solder in the presence of oxygen.

The residual is then leached to obtain copper.

*Hydrometallurgical method :

This method is used for metallic components.

The components are leached and desired metals are obtained through electro refining

*Mechanical recycling :

PCBs are turned into pulverized PCBs by milling process

It is then subjected to eddy currents

It is finally subjected to density separation process.

*Air classification method :

This method separates particles on the basis of size and density.

Heavier particles of the PCB move downward the air stream while lighter ones move up with the air stream.

*Electrostatic separation method :

This method is used to recycle Cu, Al, Pb, Sn and iron, certain amount of noble metals and plastic from scrapped PCB.

*Bio-metallurgical separation method :

Bio leaching is used to extract precious metals and copper from ores, same methodology is used to obtain metals from PCBs.

*Magnetic separation method :

This method is used for recovery of ferromagnetic metals from other non-ferrous metals and other non-magnetic waste .

*Recycling of non metallic parts by gasification:

Most of the above processes are used for separation metallic materials , the remaining parts usually end up in landfills.

Gasification is used to recycle this remaining non-metallic materials.

E-WASTE RECYCLING IN INDIA

e-waste in india

1.E waste in India is mostly disposed by the informal sectors ,which do not follow environmental friendly ways.

2.India follows schemes such as extended producer responsibility.

3.The Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) is primarily responsible for regulations regarding electronic waste. Additionally, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) produce implementation procedures to ensure proper management of rules set forth by the MoEFCC.

ADVANTAGES OF RECYCLING

E-WASTE

ADVANTAGES OF RECYCLING

E-WASTE

1.The most obvious advantage is reduction in pollution level.'

2.It helps recover valuable metals like gold , also other materials can be recovered which can be reused in various ways.

3.It lowers the need of space for landfills.

With more facilities being set up ,employment are being created.

4.it prevents long term damage as it ensures proper disposal of toxic material present in e-waste such as cadmium, lithium, mercury etc.
